Career Runway #1 – Personal Interests, Skills, and Motivators

Assessments

Use assessments like these, along with others that you can find online and through your university career centers (which often have paid subscriptions for students for free), to connect your personality traits, personal interests, skills, and motivators to interesting career paths. If your university offers career classes and programs, these will often be included in those efforts as well.

Career Runway #2 – Academics

Academic interests are not always a required connecting point to careers, but they can be a great resource when looking at everything collectively. Take some time to understand what careers your current academic interests can lead to, and what your current career interests might require from you academically.

Career Runway #3 – Industries, Companies & Jobs

A combined understanding of individual industries, industry verticals, and the difference between industries and job functions is extremely effective when discovering career directions.

Industry Verticals

Industry Verticals contain groups of related singular industries that have enough in common for you to consider collectively before getting too specific too quickly. Industry verticals like Finance will sometimes require a deeper understanding of an Individual Industry like Investment Banking, but other Industry verticals, like Marketing & Communications, are made up of several individual industries like Advertising, Communications, Marketing & Public Relations and can be researched and approached collectively.

Job Functions

Job Functions are roles and positions that exist across several different industries and companies. For example, Managing Consulting is an industry. Consulting is a job function that can live in many other industries, maybe even some are more interesting to you personally, like technology, entertainment, sports, and finance.

Networking
